The Omniums seemed near impossible to shut down as no nation was able to permanently take any one offline. Secretly the UN created an elite strike team composed of many nations most elite minds and soldiers. This strike team was able to take down the Omniums one after another and eventually brought an end to the war. The members of this team became the founders of Overwatch, an international organization that brought an age of peace, bringing the best and brightest from around the world into one place.
Over time, however, criticisms began to arise about this organization and how much power it was allowed. Overwatch’s days came to an end when the people learned of Blackwatch, a secret division of Overwatch that had carried out assassinations, torture, and other heinous acts. Before the organization was supposed to be shut down the headquarters were destroyed by an explosion brought about by fighting between the commander of Overwatch, Jack Morrison, and the leader of Blackwatch, Gabriel Reyes. With the death of both leaders in the explosion, Overwatch was disbanded and the members went their separate ways.
The game itself is set years after this with the world once again in chaos, thanks to mercenaries and various criminal activities, in addition to a second omnic crisis in Siberia. The Overwatch agents have reactivated themselves, though any new activity from them has been explicitly stated to be illegal. The world now is a crazy one with apes ruling the moon, Australia a barren radioactive wasteland, and a robotic kaiju regularly attacking Korea. To learn more about these strange circumstances and the people who are part of them, you'll have to tune in to the next article which will be for Soldier 76 and Reaper.
